Surma women enhance their beauty by wearing lip trays made from ceramic or wood, while the men engage in Donga ceremonies—traditional rituals that feature wrestling competitions. These events hold significant cultural and social importance within the Surma community.

Tour program

Day 1 - Arrival in Addis Ababa - Jimma

Arrival in Addis Ababa and head west towards Jimma by flight. Jimma was the capital of the former Keffa province. It was in this region that a shepherd first discovered coffee beans.

Day 2: Jimma – Kibish

Road to Kibish via Mizan Teferi through dense and beautiful forest. The people living in this area are the Kefecho, and the Yem and Bench ethnic groups. This place is famous throughout the country for coffee, tea and spices.

Surmas Territory (Suri)

Three full days in Suri territory (surma) you will visit several villages and be able to take photos of these flower people who like to adorn themselves with the elements of nature.

You will be able to appreciate the culture and the very particular way of life of these people. You may be able to attend a Donga (stick fight). Please note that these fights, which can lead to death, are prohibited in Ethiopia but still practiced. You will go to the herds to experience an astonishing tradition!
